Trastienda Machete and Casa Ta-Matsi are pleased to announce an open call for artists researchers and collectives interested in a residency that fosters creative exchange and immersion in the unique environment of the Mexican desert of Wirikuta.

About the Residency

The residency aims to offer a space for creation and reflection where artists can develop their projects in an atmosphere of introspection, dialogue, and interconnection with the territory. Proposals that explore the relationship between art, nature, and community are prioritized.

Casa Ta-Matsi is located in the heart of the Wirikuta desert, a place far removed from urban life, where the transition to nature becomes an essential part of the creative process. The facilities include private rooms, indoor and outdoor workspaces, and a central shared house with a dining room, kitchen, and common areas.

Selection and Curating

Trastienda Machete will be responsible for the selection and curation of the artists participating in the residency, with the intention of organizing a group exhibition at the end of the year showcasing the work developed by the residents. Trastienda Machete is a contemporary art platform, a project of Galería Machete, specializing in Latin American contemporary art. Since its founding in 2014, it has promoted the work of emerging artists, encouraging young collecting and generating spaces for dialogue and collaboration between artists, artisans, and creatives.

In January 2025, Trastienda Machete will open its first curatorial space in the Juárez neighborhood, with exhibition rooms and a versatile space for installations and multifaceted proposals in various artistic disciplines, with views of Reforma Avenue and Chapultepec. As a platform, we seek to showcase artists who contribute to social, political, economic, and aesthetic debates in the contemporary world, strengthening the Mexican and international art scene.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are accepted from artists of all disciplines, as well as researchers in need of a workspace. A maximum of two artists may apply together if they work collaboratively.

What We Offer

• Transportation from the nearest urban center to the residency.

• Accommodation in an equipped bedroom.

• Access to shared and workspaces.

• Two main meals a day and access to a pantry of basic food items.

• Botanical walk to explore the surroundings.

• Opportunity to present their work in a group exhibition at the end of the year.

How to Apply

Interested parties must submit their application in a PDF file (maximum 25 MB) including:

• A proposal of up to 500 words describing the project to be developed.

• Up to 5 images that reflect their artistic practice.

• Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages).

• Preferred residency dates.

• If you would like to apply for our Solidarity Program (review the details here), please include a brief letter outlining your motivations for applying, your current financial situation, and how participation in this residency would contribute to your artistic development.

Selection and Results

Proposals will be evaluated based on the quality of the project and its resonance with the objectives of the residency. Selected artists will be notified, and their names will be published on our official platforms.

FAQ

• Is there a cost to participate? Yes, the residency cost covers accommodation and meals, but artists are responsible for their transportation to and from the nearest urban center and all materials for their projects.

• Can I develop a collaborative project? Yes, we accept collaborative projects between two artists, as long as the proposal justifies the need for joint work.

• What kind of work is expected for the final exhibition? The exhibition will be a collective show that reflects the residents' experiences at Casa Ta-Matsi. There are no format restrictions, but pieces that engage with the context of the residency are encouraged.

• Can I apply if I don't speak Spanish? Yes, although a basic knowledge of the language is recommended to facilitate integration with the environment and community.

• Can I have visitors during the residency? External visits are subject to authorization and must be coordinated with the organization.

Sobre la Residencia

La residencia busca ofrecer un espacio de creación y reflexión donde los artistas puedan desarrollar sus proyectos en un ambiente de introspección, diálogo e interconexión con el territorio. Se priorizan propuestas que exploren la relación entre arte, naturaleza y comunidad.

Casa Ta-Matsi se ubica en el corazón del desierto de Wirikuta, un espacio alejado de la vida urbana, donde la transición a la naturaleza se convierte en parte esencial del proceso creativo. Las instalaciones incluyen habitaciones privadas, espacios de trabajo interiores y exteriores, y una casa central compartida con comedor, cocina y áreas comunes.

Selección y Curaduría

Trastienda Machete será la encargada de la selección y curaduría de los artistas que participarán en la residencia, con la intención de generar una exposición grupal a final de año con el trabajo desarrollado por los residentes. Trastienda Machete es una plataforma de arte contemporáneo, un proyecto de Galería Machete especializado en arte contemporáneo latinoamericano. Desde su fundación en 2014, ha promovido el trabajo de artistas emergentes, fomentando la colección joven y generando espacios de diálogo y colaboración entre artistas, artesanos y creativos.

En enero de 2025, Trastienda Machete inaugura su primer espacio curatorial en la colonia Juárez, con salas de exposición y un espacio con versatilidad para instalación y multifuncional para propuestas artísticas de diversas disciplinas, con vista a la avenida Reforma y Chapultepec. Como plataforma, buscamos exhibir artistas que aporten a los debates sociales, políticos, económicos y estéticos del mundo contemporáneo, fortaleciendo la escena artística mexicana e internacional.

¿Quién puede aplicar?

Se aceptan solicitudes de artistas de todas las disciplinas, así como investigadores que requieran un espacio de trabajo. Un máximo de dos artistas pueden postularse juntos si trabajan en colaboración.

¿Qué ofrecemos?

• Transporte desde el núcleo urbano más cercano a la residencia.

• Alojamiento en un dormitorio equipado.

• Acceso a los espacios compartidos y de trabajo.

• Dos comidas principales al día y acceso a la despensa de alimentos básicos.

• Caminata botánica de reconocimiento del entorno.

• Oportunidad de presentar su trabajo en una exposición grupal a final de año.

¿Cómo aplicar?

Los interesados deben enviar su solicitud en un archivo PDF (máximo 25 MB) que incluya:

1. Una propuesta de hasta 500 palabras describiendo el proyecto a desarrollar.

2. Hasta 5 imágenes que reflejen su práctica artística.

3. Currículum vitae (máximo 2 páginas).

4. Fecha de residencia preferida.

FAQ

¿Hay algún costo para participar? Si, el costo de la residencia incluye  alojamiento y alimentación. Los artistas deben cubrir sus gastos de transporte hasta el núcleo urbano más cercano y cualquier material específico para sus proyectos.

¿Puedo desarrollar un proyecto colaborativo? Sí, aceptamos proyectos colaborativos entre dos artistas, siempre que la propuesta justifique la necesidad de trabajo en conjunto.

¿Qué tipo de obra se espera para la exposición final? La exposición será una muestra colectiva que refleje la experiencia de los residentes en Casa Ta-Matsi. No hay restricciones de formato, pero se fomentan piezas que dialoguen con el contexto de la residencia.

¿Puedo aplicar si no hablo español? Sí, aunque se recomienda un conocimiento básico del idioma para facilitar la integración con el entorno y la comunidad.

¿Se pueden realizar visitas durante la residencia? Las visitas externas están sujetas a autorización y deben coordinarse con la organización.
