Substance in the shadows, by Estefanía Viyella
Estefanía Viyella's latest exhibition, which is also her first solo show, Substance in the shadows, features a series of portraits of women close to her.
Sisters, friends and the artist's mother are depicted in moments of contemplation, their expressions stern yet thoughtful, framed by delicate hand gestures. Her bold use of color evokes calm and introspective reflection, all while challenging traditional representations of femininity.
Viyella, born in Veracruz, Mexico, holds a Fine Arts degree from the University of the Americas in Puebla and a Master's in Graphic Design from the Barcelona School of Arts and Design. Her oil paintings, which explore color and composition, have been showcased in exhibitions such as Nueva Piel para una Vieja Ceremonia at Karen Huber Gallery, Creación en Movimiento at the Cuatro Caminos Photo Museum, and Otro trabajo, otro trabaja at Espacio Cabeza. In 2018, she was awarded the Jóvenes Creadores grant by the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes.
